My Lighter Side! Photo Shoot with my Poodles Sienna and Mystic

It all started when…

I was a young girl. My parents were never surprised at what animal may come home with me! Orphaned Rabbits, injured birds or stray dogs; all creatures were magical to me. As I got older that love and passion has never left me. If you visit our Prairie Homestead you will find chickens, rabbits, our dogs and maybe a goat or two!

One of things that truly interest me is the mystery of genetics in dogs. Even as a child I would stalk our local library for books on dogs, breeds and training. Horses were another love and I would ride my bike a few miles to visit horses near our home.

The opening page of this website tells of my falling in love with Poodles! So if you missed reading that, please go back and hear the story of why poodles!

It All Started When

I married Karen, she had 2 Yorkies at the time and they were her constant companions. It didn’t take long to see her passion for dogs and after 6 months of marriage we added a rescue Greyhound to our family. You can guess that over the years we had a few adopted animals that were in need of TLC.

When Karen finished another round of cancer treatments and had medical issues she needed an assistance dog. Her allergies were really bad so we looked into a Standard Poodle. We picked up Sienna; Karen was so in love she wanted to show Sienna and so…..it began! At one of the local shows, Karen’s back gave out and she turned to me and said, “You're going to have to show Sienna.” I went to the shows with Karen, but never held the end of a lead! 2 show friends came to my rescue and took me outside for a quick lesson is showing. Sienna and I earned her Championship title that day!

It wasn’t long after that we added Indigo to our family and my first show dog! He and I have had so much fun and added performance to my list of dog achievements! So I guess you could say the rest is history!

It All Started When

Hobs joined our family in 2009 from Ethiopia. In Ethiopia, dogs are for guarding homes and businesses; not pets. Arriving at our home in Michigan, at the time, he was greeted by several dogs of varying sizes! It did take awhile for him to get used to the idea that dogs were friendly and lived in our home.

Hobs and Luna have a very close relationship. It is fun to see how that has evolved. Hobs when he is home from college, helps with the routine chores around the homestead. He helps with play times to feeding time. We did manage to get him into the show ring one time! Hobs would say, it isn’t his idea of fun…..rather soccer, basketball or running are his sports of choice. I will say he takes the dogs on long runs in summer and they all come home ready for a nap!

It All Started When

Dawn Turner, a family friend, came to see Luna and Roux’s first litter. Dawn is hearing impaired and recently had lost her little service dog, Yoda Bear. She came to get a “puppy fix” as we call it! After several visits with Luna’s babies, I could see a bond forming between Judy (Juliet at the time) and Dawn. The day came when Dawn was ready for a new service dog and we knew that Judy would be perfect.

Since that day, Dawn has come to play with and bath every puppy born here at Winters Wind. She has a unique bond with each pup and it is so fun to watch as she lovingly baths and spends time with each baby. This has grown into a second role here; that of puppy transport! Dawn has crossed the U.S. with puppies going to their forever homes. It’s a relaxed trip for puppy since they know her so well and Miss Judy is along as a dog Nana on every road trip. We are so blessed to have Dawn on our team and part of our family!

Allison Lindsey came to Winters Wind through our mutual vet; where she also works part time. Allison and I connected right away. Allison has 3 horses, 3 dogs and multiple cats; her love and passion for animals makes us sisters of the heart! Allison, loves each animal here at the homestead and even helped us build our chicken coop!

If we need to be away overnight, Allison and her sister, Sue have stayed here to keep an excellent eye on everyone.

Allison is also an amazing photographer and is often taking pictures of puppies, cats and dogs, her eye for a good photo is a true talent! She is going to become our official photographer here at Winters Wind!

It All Started When

My daughter recalled as a child we always owned Collies. After cutting off part of my finger in a barn accident, she thought what we needed was a shepherd! So Sampson joined our family! Sampson is amazing with all the puppies; playing gently with them, guarding and herding them when outside.

Izabella, decided to birth early and on our sofa! After the puppy was born, Izabella looked for a place to have the rest! I heard the baby cry and bolted to the living room. Here I find Sampson, his head around the puppy, keeping it warm in his ruff!

He is our official, puppy guardian.
